‘Medicine’ cabinets, if there is such a thing anymore, are no longer off limits to our teens. Prescription pill popping is so common place now with media advertising and TV commercials targeting young parents to baby boomer grand parents that it’s no wonder our teens take it to heart that it’s okay for them to do it too. Wrong. Parents, if you must pop ‘em, protect them and do it out of plain sight and pain sight. Keep them inaccessible. Better still, find natural alternative ways to deal with your issues. With teens, you’re not the only ones in your house and they are very sensitive, very aware of what’s going on. It’s obvious to them that it’s permissible.

How do you protect them from the side effects that they don’t even consider along with the drugs, which undermine their entire psyche making them anti-social, anti-school, anti-communicative, and anti-help driving them into further depression to the point of being suicidal? Most people forget that pharmaceutical drugs are mostly derived from plants. Try researching the natural derivatives with a natural health practitioner and natural foods to help your teens.

Peer pressure, anxiety, and moodiness as hormones change or make their debut are common and part of growing up. With aware parents they will get through. We all did. The epidemic increase of depression is one of the most troublesome teen problems. A March 1st, ‘09 full page add in the NYTimes from the The Partnership for a Drug-Free America, stated that “1 in 5 high school teens admits to abusing prescription drugs.” That’s an epidemic that we have to face. But how can we face it when those drugs come from mom and dad, the two people these kids need to trust more than anyone else in their lives.

Drugs are drugs. They trust us and we trust the pharmacies. Wrong. Another quote:“taking drugs without a prescription can be as dangerous and addictive as using street drugs.” It’s easy when they’re 2 -years-old. Oh, those terrible 2’s! Flexing their gimmees and NOs. But the teen years are more contemplative, more quietly discontent, dark countenances, tenuousness, fear of life’s coming unknowns, slamming doors, unresponsiveness, withdrawing into themselves, and within their rooms. What to do. Make a haven of relaxation, acceptance, and natural snacks to munch on.

We’re creating a generation of prescription addicted teens.Be aware of their moods. You were there. With each birthday expect the expected and let them know that what they’re going through is not unexpected. Tell them you got through it. You’re there for them. Explain to them why you’re taking those drugs specific to what condition and that they don’t have it and how harmful it can be for them. Their anger and hostility are pretty normal to a degree. It’s OK. You’ve got their backs. You love them regardless…forever. Together make a lifestyle change to a more natural approach.

One solution to consider while keeping that lid on your drugs, start introducing natural alternative remedies and foods into your lives. Help them cope by helping them change their brain chemistry with non chemical, natural foods and nutrients. Get them into the kitchen with you to cook their favorite meal. Teens can feel isolated and alone which can drive them to drugs. Hug ‘em. They never tire of that or hearing your validations of love.

Take them or better yet, send them for an Aromatherapy massage. Now there’s a constructive suggestion. Those are sooooo nice, relaxing and therapeutic for guys and gals to get rid of tension if only for a little while. Put some fragrances around the house, whatever they like or try something new. Change the pictures on the walls and the furniture around the house. Break the monotony in the house for them. Drag out some new childhood photos. Make the issue subtly not pointedly just to let them know you notice and care. Take a LOVE time out. Create an atmosphere of love and trust so they come to you rather than go your ‘medicine’ cabinet.

1 Cup Wild Rice
2 Cups Water or Organic Chicken Broth
1/2 teaspoon Salt

1 Medium finely diced Onion
1 Stalk finely diced Celery
2 Cups shredded Zucchini, about 2 medium
1 Cup Corn Niblets (frozen or fresh unsweetened)
3+ Tablespoons Pure Olive Oil (light)
Juice of 1/2 Lemon
2 teaspoons Dried Basil
2 teaspoons Dried Marjoram
1 Tablespoon fresh Parsley, finely chopped
1/4 Cup grated Parmesan (sweet) OR Romano (tangy)
1/2 – 3/4 teaspoon Pure Honey
Salt & Pepper
Cayenne Pepper, Pinch
1 Rounded Tablespoon Organic Cane or Brown Sugar
Sweet Paprika or Spanish for more heat
Cinnamon
About 3/4 Cup Organic Chicken Broth or till thin layer in baking dish
8 Bone-in and skin-on whole chicken leg quarters, salt rubbed and washed

*NOTE: You can add golden raisins or dried cranberries for a more complex taste layer. Even some wine. Experiment with white or medium bodied red. I left out garlic from this one, but, of course put it in to your taste if you want. Make it and then make it yours.

400 degree oven
Baking time: About 1-1/2 hours or until juice is clear from leg/thigh joint
One medium saucepan w/ cover
One heavy skillet (NOT nonstick)
One large mixing bowl
Glass or heavy ceramic/cast iron baking dish oiled, sprinkled with salt, pepper, paprika.
Aluminum Foil

To prepare:

Preheat oven. Wash wild rice through a strainer and turn into a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir/roast rice till dry and aromatic. Before adding water/broth run sides and bottom of saucepan under cold water tilting away from running water going around outside of pan only. This cools pan and prevents splattering when you add water/broth to rice. Add water/broth and salt. Cover. Bring to boil then turn down to simmer for about 45 minutes till rice is slightly al dente. When done turn out into large bowl to cool.

While rice is cooking heat 2 Tablespoons olive oil in heavy skillet on medium heat. Add onion and celery and sauté till onions are translucent about 5 minutes. Add zucchini and nibblets and sauté additional few minutes with pinch of salt adding more oil if necessary. Remove from heat and turn mixture into bowl. Add next nine ingredients adjusting to your taste, and mix thoroughly. When rice is cooled, add to veggie mix and allow to cool until you can handle it. Carefully insert fingers between skin and meat of each leg gently opening up a pocket as far down the leg as you can go. Fill each pocket with rice mixture pushing it back gently under the skin being careful not to tear it. As each leg is filled place in baking dish. When dish is filled, brush each leg with olive oil, top with salt, pepper, paprika, a very light sprinkling of sugar and cinnamon. Add chicken broth and cover. Bake 45 minutes. Uncover and bake additional 15-20+ minutes. Skins should be browned and crunchy. Leg/thigh joint juice should be clear. Serve with salad for a scrumptious one plate meal!

Baking time about 1-1/2 hours covered with rack in middle of oven

*NOTE: You can add golden raisins or dried cranberries for a more complex taste layer. Make it and then make it yours.

To prepare:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Oil baking dish and add a thin layer of some of the tomato sauce on the bottom. In one large mixing bowl combine thoroughly with your hands, ground turkey with next 8 ingredients. Be bold and add some more of any ingredient that you like. Make this your own.

Form into three loaves and place each into baking dish. Pour remainder of the tomato sauce over and around loaves. Place the cut potatoes all around and sprinkle them with salt, pepper, & paprika. Add chicken broth to the dish, cover with aluminum foil, and bake. Check softness of potatoes after one hour. Return to oven for another 20 – 30 minutes until potatoes are very soft but not falling apart and loaves are deliciously steaming. Remove from oven and allow to rest 5-10 minutes. It is ready to be devoured. Don’t expect leftovers, but IF there are, it’s just as delicious reheated, frozen with gravy & potatoes or on a sandwich hot or cold. YUM!

1 /2 teaspoon Dried oregano
2 15-oz. cans black beans, undrained
1 teaspoon chopped seeded canned Chipotle chilies*
or to taste
1 Cup sour cream
1/2+ Cup chopped fresh Cilantro (I love cilantro so I use a lot.)
You can also add some cilantro while cooking beans. Use some as added flavor at end and in the preparation.
Salt and pepper to taste

*Chipotle chilies, canned in a spicy tomato sauce, sometimes called adobo, are available in Latin American markets and Latin American sections of supermarkets.

To prepare:

Cook turkey bacon in large skillet over medium heat until crisp, about 3-4+ minutes. Drain and coarsely chop. Set aside. Add olive oil to same skillet. Add onion and bell pepper, sauté until onion is soft, about 6 minutes scraping up bacon bits. Add cumin and oregano: sauté 1 minute. Add beans with their liquid and chipotles. Simmer over medium low heat until slightly thickened, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes.
Transfer 1 cup bean mixture to blender or processor. Blend until smooth. Stir into remaining bean mixture. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to bowl. Cover and chill 2 hours. (Can be made 2 days ahead, but chill bacon separately.) Chop and add bacon to bean mixture before serving.

Stir cilantro into dip and serve chilled or at room temperature. Top with sour cream or serve sour cream on the side. Dip your choice of chips, but my preferences are toasted tortillas cut or broken into chips sizes and the same for pita chips done the same way. Deeelightful!
